Fundraising and Financials
Fundraising
The Nonprofit Association of Oregon (NAO) and Farmers Market Coalition (FMC) have excellent resources for budgeting and fundraising.
Nonprofit markets can find a plethora of advice and guidance on fundraising on NAO’s Resource Development page. Get advice on fundraising, grant writing, donor engagement, donor management, and more.
All markets can find useful funding tips from FMC’s Funding and Grants resource library page.
Preparing a Budget
OFMA has a simple fundraising budget template available for markets. Simply make a copy and adjust to your needs.
In 2022, NAO hosted an Understanding Farmers Market Financials workshop. This workshop provides an overview of basic financial principles, including board member responsibilities, understanding restrictions, reviewing your statements for key financial indicators, and internal controls.
In 2023, NAO hosted another workshop Functional Forecasting: Taking Control of Cash Flow. In this workshop they explored how cash flows in and out of an organization, learn how to use a cash flow ledger to track financial history and project into the future, and explore financial health indicators that can jeopardize financial stability.
A few Oregon markets have generously shared some of their financial planning documents to help other markets build out templates of their own. You can read through them here:
